During WW2 what drove the Allied Forces to build their first Atomic Bomb? How did the Soviets infiltrate deep into the heart of this top secret project? Join award-winning Science writer Jim Baggott, for a unique fly-on -the-wall look at some of the most important moments of WW2 and The Cold War.
At a meeting on 20 September 1941, the British government decided to act on the recommendations of a small committee of physicists and commit to building an atomic bomb, in a project called 'Tube Alloys'. Within just a few days of this decision, the Soviet NKVD (a forerunner to the KGB) had full details of the meeting. The Soviet Union had spies working at the heart of the Allied project to build an atomic bomb, right from its inception.
In this talk, Jim Baggott, author of 'Atomic: The First War of Physics and the Secret History of the Atom Bomb', will explore the role of espionage at the birth of the atomic age. Jim will examine aspects of Soviet tradecraft, and the use of 'one-time pads' that would eventually allow a team of codebreakers at Arlington Hall (the American Bletchley Park) to decipher messages that had been sent to Moscow from Soviet embassies in the US.
This talk will investigate the extent to which espionage by Fuchs and other had aided the Soviet effort, leading to nuclear proliferation at the start of the Cold War.
