Gypsy Stew embodies the spirit of classic country music blending the joyous rhythms of bluegrass, the soul of traditional country and the engaging energy of roots rock. They are consistently recognized among the top country artists in southern California. Don Cook’s exuberant guitar work and smooth vocals combine with Gayle Walker's amazing vocals and eccentric percussion (coffee cans, pie pans and world percussion) to create Gypsy Stew – an exciting duo (sometimes trio) exuding good time, down home entertainment. Their passion for original style and unique instrumentation gives older cover songs new life that evolves with each performance. Their original material shows a fresh, energetic take on what defines country music today.
Don Cook is a singer/songwriter with Ohio farm roots who played and toured in the U.S. and Internationally with Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown in the late 1970's and early 1980's and with various bands in the Chicago area until his move to Los Angeles in the late 1980's. He had a mostly successful business career which ended in disaster during the Great Recession. He is wondering if it is called “re-invention” when you just go back to doing what you love.
Gayle Walker is an artist and musician who developed her own unique percussion style by sticking to the adage “no real drums”. She is a 5th generation Californian who hails from Simi Valley and was an enthusiastic member of the Hollywood art/punk music scene with her activist band “Girl Jesus”. Gayle was a scenic painter with the studios. Among her many projects, she worked on the Tower of Terror at Disneyland’s California Adventure. Gayle’s own reinvention took her back to her roots in Simi Valley.
Gypsy Stew was born as it should be – on the road. The pair were camping and performing across the country in early 2012 when Don became fascinated by Gayle’s ability to throw together concoctions of meals based on whatever was available – thus Gypsy Stew
