Dave Smith had a vision when he moved back from the Bay Area to the Midwest at the end of 2010. He wanted to continue his musical endeavors and give this part of the country something different and exciting. Smith was a seasoned musical veteran and was in a variety of great bands during his 18 year span in California. He drummed in such acts as Lowki and Fuzzplow and then switched to vocals for Sinister Farmers Big Machine, Braindozer and Lost Machine, performing all over the country from clubs to festivals. He toured relentlessly, performed shows all over the Bay Area and recorded many CD’S in the process. His bands played with the likes of Clutch, High on Fire, Swarm (Death Angel), WASP, Machine Head, Drunk Horse, Prong, Skinlab, Wardance (Exodus) and many, many more.
After moving back to the Midwest to care for his ailing parents suffering from cancer, Smith decided to find the best musicians in the area to forge ahead with his musical journey. He assembled three great Midwestern, seasoned veterans. His first thought was an old acquaintance from his Midwestern club days in the 80’s and early 90’s, the indestructible Steve Kisner. Kisner (Smash Alley, Legacy, Room 212, Rebel City Outlaws, The Genie Band) immediately jumped on board and started learning and contributing to new songs on guitar with a vengeance. Kisner is a very talented musician and the two reformed a bond that made it seem like there was never a 20 year lapse between bands for the two.
Next on board was one of the most talented drummers in the state, Sean Dorton. Dorton (Spatterdash, Skin Kandy) is a left-handed whirling dervish behind the kit. Anything from a simple groove to a complex polyrhythm is easily accomplished by him. He is a fantastic musician with plenty of experience and thunder. Dorton was a perfect fit for this band.
The final piece was a man by the name of Mark Wagler. Wagler ( 3 Stories High, Second Glance, Airbag,O’Connell Brothers Band) is a guitar virtuoso of 25 years and Musicians Institute Graduate in Hollywood that can, simply put, play anything. He immediately gelled with the band and Kisner, being the talented musician he is, made the transition over to bass and the lineup was complete. Wagler has a very original style from tasty licks to more complex riffing. His leads are mind-blowing, timing is impeccable and his rhythms are as a tight as a pair of his 4th grade jeans.
From this lineup, Old Man’s Curse was born. The band is groove oriented; classic rocked influenced and has influences that include Clutch, Hendrix, ZZ Top, Doors, Kyuss, Soundgarden, A.I.C. and Black Sabbath. The band plays both covers and originals, with the setting dictating how they split those up. You can watch this band in amazement, groove on the dance floor, bang your head or drink a cocktail. In any case, this is a band to be reckoned with, so come on out and share a night with the ever eery and sometimes inconclusive, yet confident, group of 2012, OLD MANS CURSE………… Welcome Aboard……..
