Ustad Shahid Parvez + Parveen Sultana v Barbican Centre
Closing Darbar Festival 2018 music part are two of India’s most acclaimed musicians, sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez and the ‘Queen of Indian classical music’, Parveen Sultana.
Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan descends from six generations of sitarists and was trained by his father and guru, Ustad Aziz Khan. He is perhaps the most famous sitar player of today and has been described as ‘Indian music personified’ by The Hindu. Influenced by the late Ustad Vilayat Khan, his playing strikes a fine balance between traditionalism and innovation.
‘Queen of Indian Classical music’, ‘genius of Hindustani music’, the ‘ultimate soprano’ the list of superlatives that have been used to describe Parveen Sultana are unending and richly deserved. Born into a family of musicians she gave her first stage performance at the tender age of twelve and has never looked back. A major celebrity in India, she has not been confined to her Classical routes, providing songs for numerous Bollywood films throughout her illustrious career. Tonight, her voice will wail and swoop across a staggering three and a half octave range for a performance that moves seamlessly from meditative to exhilarating.
