LSO Music Director Sir Simon Rattle introduces the season:

"The idea of exploration, going to the unfamiliar and developing things together, brings me to the concept behind our music this season: the roots, origins and future of music. Together with the LSO and its wonderful family of artists, we will look back to folk music, to music from the land, to pieces that defy genres, and to those we consider forefathers of composing techniques that are still so relevant.

My own concerts this season explore many cultural traditions and their impact on music – the folk tunes of Eastern Europe, of Britain and more, alongside a look at their influence on jazz.

Gianandrea Noseda and François-Xavier Roth, LSO Principal Guest Conductors, present concerts exploring Russian, French and Spanish identity, and, alongside Kristjan Järvi and Elim Chan, we all salute the future with seven premiere performances across the 2018/19 season.

LSO Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas and Sir Mark Elder explore the maverick genius Charles Ives; Sir Antonio Pappano puts three of the great Italian opera composers together in non-operatic works; Sir John Eliot Gardiner continues his retrospective of Schumann; Marin Alsop rounds off the Bernstein centenary with Candide; and Bernard Haitink reaches his 90th birthday. Evenings with Bernard are always very special and there’s wisdom and humility there that is without parallel.

For my colleagues and me, it has been fascinating putting these programmes together and to see what would spark our collective imaginations. For a conductor, the orchestra is our voice. Now I will be learning to sing with a new voice – I couldn’t be happier."
