Pentadox v Rataplan Vzw
Pentadox is a contemporary jazz trio consisting of Sylvain Debaisieux (tenor saxophone), Bram De Looze (piano) and Samuel Ber (drums).
They mix intuition and intellect, while maintaining a strong and independent relationship between the 3 protagonists; similar to neurons, actually. Each tune is built like a board game, with its own set of rules, melodic fragments, rhythmic patterns, harmonic and philosophical concepts… And then, through a fresh and an adventurous approach, the players explore the game and make it an open field, stretching time and space. They incorporate elements of modern classical music & avant-garde and improvised music.
There is no traditional hierarchy in Pentadox. The gravity can switch at any moment, thanks to the tenor saxophone – piano – drums formula, which allows an interesting blend of textures too. Pentadox is a band of neurons playing board games in space.
Born in 2015 during a residency in Jazz Station (Brussels), the band was selected a few months later as Belgian finalist at B-Jazz International Contest and performed at Leuven Jazz Festival 2016. Pentadox is managed by Inside Jazz Management (Belgium).
THE MUSICIANS
Sylvain Debaisieux started playing the saxophone at the age of 8. Later in his career he studied under John Ruocco and Jeroen Van Herzeele at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel. In 2016, he received a BAEF music study scholarship and was admitted in the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. After 2 years of touring with the European Saxophone Ensemble, project directed by French saxophone player Guillaume Orti, he now is regularly performing on the Belgian scene with different jazz bands. His latest recorded album was in December 2014 with Eve Beuvens’ Heptatomic.
Bram De Looze (°1991) studied jazz piano at the Lemmens Instituut with Ron Van Rossum and at the Conservatorium of Antwerp with Erik Vermeulen. He has also studied at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York with jazzmasters such as Reggie Workman, Marc Copland, Uri Caine and many others. In 2016, he won the SABAM Jazz Award voor Jong Talent. He is now member of different bands including LABtrio, Dre Hocevar Trio, Robin Verheyen Duo, Stephanos Chytiris’ Flux, De Looze / Machtel / De Waele, Sander De Winne Group as well as a new septet including Robin Verheyen, Daniel Levin and Flin Van Hemmen. He has also performed with Bert Joris, Dré Pallemaerts, Nic Thys, Brussels Jazz Orchestra with Maria Joao & David Linx and a collaboration with bassist Greg Cohen for the Jazz Middelheim Festival.
Samuel Ber (°1995) studied drums at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen with Dré Pallemaerts, Jan de Haas, Teun Verbruggen and was admitted at 21 in the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, in the Jazz and Improvised Music Department directed by Riccardo Del Fra. The same year, he was selected to be part of the Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music, directed by Vijay Iyer. Composer and improviser, he played in the trio Tony Malaby / Jozef Dumoulin / Samuel Ber, with Kris Defoort’s An Old Monk featuring the Belgian actor Josse De Pauw (touring in Europe in 2015 and 2016), Nicolas Thys, Jeroen Van Herzeele, Bo Van Der Werf and Guillaume Orti among many others. He composed the soundtrack for the theater piece « Plainte Contre X » in Theatre de Poche (Brussels). He is also currently working with Bram De Looze and Gilbert Nouno (from IRCAM) on a new project mixing music and theater.
Saxophonist and composer, Bo Van der Werf is graduated from the Amsterdams Conservatory. He leads and writes for his main project Octurn (with Dré Pallemaerts, Jozef Dumoulin and Fabian Fiorini), his main project. He also plays with Jozef Dumoulin’s band Lidlboj, and with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra. He also leads his own small ensembles and plays free-lance with different groups (including Sylvain Cathala’s and Alexandra Grimal’s projects). Besides writing for his band Octurn, Bo composes music for films, for dance performances and for contemporary classical ensembles. He teaches at Antwerpen’s and Leuven’s conservatories.
Guillaume Orti studied both jazz and classical saxophone at the Regional Conservatory of Avignon and attended many different instrumental workshops throughout his teenage-hood. In 1990, he participated to the 4 weeks jazz seminar of the Banff Center of Fine Arts (Canada) under the direction of Steve Coleman. Settled in Paris in 1989, he co-founded the band Kartet (together with pianist Benoît Delbecq and bassist Hubert Dupont), then the collectives of musicians Hask and Mercoledi & Co. These three ensembles were to become leading voices in the field of improvised music. They have always highly valued collective creativity and practice.
For the years 2012 and 2013, he was artictic director of the European Saxophone Ensemble : an ensemble of 12 young saxophonists from twelve different countries of the European Union gathered for an original repertoire created by 5 European composers.
Nowadays he is part of the creative groups Kartet, Mâäk (led by Laurent Blondiau), Reverse (with Olivier Sens on computer), The Progressive Patriots (led by Hasse Poulsen), Stéphane Payen-Guillaume Orti duet as well as a trio with Andy Amler on piano or organ and Ballaké Sissolo on kora.
