TwoSense are back at LPR for the first time since their debut in 2011!
They have been described as the “new music equivalent of a special ops team” (New York Magazine), an “excellent duo” and “eloquent new-music interpreters” (New York Times). This New York-based chamber duo and commissioning venture, was established by the Bang On A Can All-Stars cellist Ashley Bathgate and founding alumna pianist Lisa Moore in 2010. TwoSense have performed at Bargemusic, National Sawdust, (le) poisson rouge, Rubin Museum, Spectrum, Bang on a Can 25th Anniversary Marathon (World Financial Center), Roulette, Detroit Institute for the Arts, The Presidio San Francisco, Center for New Music San Francisco, Firehouse12 New Haven, MIT, Wesleyan and Yale Universities as well as in festivals Saratoga Arts NY and Southern Exposure Columbia SC. TwoSense have commissioned over 14 new works for cello and piano - including pieces by composers Samuel Carl Adams, Martin Bresnick, Ryan Brown, Paul Dresher, Stephen Feigenbaum, Daniel Felsenfeld, Paul Kerekes, Amy Beth Kirsten, Hannah Lash, Ingram Marshall, Kate Moore, Jack Perla, and Daniel Wohl - with grants from Meet the Composer, Barlow, and Fromm Foundations. TwoSense have released recordings on Albany, Starkland, and Bandcamp. Of their Starkland recording “Prayers Remain Forever” (by Martin Bresnick) Fanfare wrote “both dig deeply into their material...building to a rock-solid conclusion as it brings back the opening material in a new light. They give a powerhouse rendition.”
American cellist Ashley Bathgate has been described as an “eloquent new music interpreter” (New York Times) and “a glorious cellist” (Washington Post) who combines “bittersweet lyricism along with ferocious chops” (New York Magazine). Her “impish ferocity”, “rich tone” and “imaginative phrasing” (New York Times) have made her one of the most sought after performers of her time. The desire to create a dynamic energy exchange with her audience and build upon the ensuing chemistry is a pillar of Bathgate's philosophy as a performer. Her affinity to dynamism drives Bathgate to venture into previously uncharted areas of ground-breaking sounds and techniques, breaking the mold of a cello's traditionally perceived voice. Collaborators and fans alike describe her vitality as nothing short of remarkable and magical for all who are involved. Bathgate is a member of the award winning, internationally acclaimed sextet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, the chamber music group HOWL and is also a founding member of TwoSense, a duo with pianist Lisa Moore, and Bonjour, a low-strung, percussive quintet. In 2014 Bathgate premiered a new Cello Concerto by Australian composer Kate Moore with the ASKO|Schönberg ensemble at the Gaudeamus Festival in Utrecht, NL. Subsequently she recorded an album of Moore's works for solo cello, entitled Stories For Ocean Shells, which was released as her debut solo album on Cantaloupe Music. In 2015 she also gave the world premiere of What Moves You, a collaborative performance project with jookin’ dance sensation Lil Buck at the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, NC. Most recently, Bathgate commissioned the composer collective Sleeping Giant to write her a six-movement suite for solo cello entitled “ASH”, which was premiered in 2016. Both ASH and her latest album, 8 Track, featuring new multitrack works by Alex Weiser and Emily Cooley as well as a new version of Steve Reich's Cello Counterpoint, will be commercially released this coming season. Bathgate’s radio/television appearances include performances on BBC Radio 3, WKCR, WMHT, WQXR’s Meet the Composer podcast with Nadia Sirota, NPR’s Performance Today, WYNC’s New Sounds Live, SiriusXM, Late Night and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Her recorded work can be found on Albany Records, Cantaloupe Music, Innova Recordings, La-La Land Records, Naxos, Nonesuch, Starkland and Uffda Records. Originally from Saratoga Springs, NY, Bathgate began her cello studies with the late Rudolf Doblin, principal cellist and assistant music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic in the 1950’s. After his passing, she resumed her tutelage with Ann Alton at Skidmore College. From there she continued on to study at Bard College with Luis Garcia-Renart (B.M.) and then at the Yale University School of Music with renowned cellist, Aldo Parisot (M.M. & A.D). Lisa Moore has recorded over thirty collaborative ensemble discs (Sony, Nonesuch, DG, BMG, New World, ABC Classics, Albany, New Albion, Starkland, Harmonia Mundi). She has performed with a diverse range of musicians and artists – the London Sinfonietta, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New York City Ballet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Steve Reich Ensemble, American Composers Orchestra, So Percussion, Ensemble Signal, Australian Chamber Orchestra, TwoSense, Grand Band and the Paul Dresher Double Duo. Moore’s festival performances include Lincoln Center, BAM, Big Ears, Tanglewood, Gilmore, Chautauqua, Huddersfield, Paris d’Automne, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, BBC Proms, Southbank, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne Metropolis,Graz, Vienna, Israel and Warsaw in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, La Scala, Carnegie Hall and the Musikverein. As featured soloist Moore has performed concertos with the London Sinfonietta, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Albany, La Jolla, Sydney, Tasmania, Thai, Monash MAPA and Canberra Symphony Orchestras, Philharmonia Virtuosi,Wesleyan Orchestra and Sumarsam Gamelan, and the Queensland Philharmonic – under the batons of Bradley Lubman, Steve Schick, Benjamin Northey, Richard Mills, Reinbert de Leeuw, Jorge Mester, and Angel Gil-Ordonez. From 1992-2008 Lisa Moore was the founding pianist for the electro-acoustic sextet The Bang On A Can All-Stars – winner of Musical America’s 2005 Ensemble of the Year Award. Lisa has worked with over 200 composers – ranging from Iannis Xenakis, Elliot Carter, Philip Glass and Frederic Rzewski to Ornette Coleman, David Lang, Meredith Monk, Thurston Moore, Hannah Lash and Martin Bresnick.
