Andy Irvine & Paul Brady v Barbican Centre
Two of the most revered musicians from Ireland’s dynamic Trad-Folk scene of the 1970s reconvene for a celebratory performance of their collaborative record Andy Irvine/Paul Brady.
Revisiting this seminal record, the duo will perform their timeless interpretations of the Irish Folk tradition that still sound as bewitching today, 40 years on, as they did upon initial release. The chemistry between the two multi-instrumentalists is still abundantly clear as they traverse the album’s track list – moving from heat-wrenching ballads to foot-stomping jigs. Adding weight to proceedings, the pair will be joined by the two men they made the album with; renowned fiddler Kevin Burke and Dónal Lunny, who produced the original recording of the album.
Brady toured with the revolutionary Irish Folk group Planxty in the mid-seventies following Christy Moore’s departure. Planxty imploded in 1975, but during his brief spell in the band Brady made a life-long friend and collaborator in Irvine. Of that period Irvine states ‘We adjourned to Madigan’s pub in Donnybrook. We drank to the demise of Planxty, and said, “So what do we do now?” We decided to stick together and become a duo.’
